The Discriminator of the Year anti-award waits for the nominees
The organizing committee of the yearly anti-award The Discriminator of the Year waits for the nominees who will contest being the grossest violators of equality and non-discrimination principles in Ukraine. The event is aimed at drawing attention to this problem.
There are traditional nominations: “My Tongue Is My Enemy” (for the most discriminatory utterance), “Real Sh.” (for the most discriminatory action) and “Discrimination-In-Law” (for the most dangerous and discriminatory legislative initiative).
Everybody can propose the nominee for the anti-award; any person or organization that distinguished themselves with gross violation of human rights could become the winner. You need to fill in the special form on the website of Coalition for Combating Discrimination in Ukraine till November 8 in order to apply.
Special contest commission of leading experts in human rights defense will choose the award winners. The award distribution will take place on the eve of International Day for Tolerance that is celebrated on November 16.
The main prize is blinders (special plates put on a horse’s head so it could not look around) symbolizing the narrow-mindedness of the winners that is seen in their actions and opinions.
Let’s recall that last year the award in nomination “My Tongue Is My Enemy” was given to the ex-mayor of Kyiv Oleksandr Omelchenko who took the liberty of making derogatory remarks about people with disabilities. PAT Delta Bank was the best in nomination “Real Sh.” with refusal to provide consumer credits to people with disabilities. The winner among legislative initiatives was the National Bank of Ukraine with the decree that limited the use of banking services for the people officially registered in Crimea.
One of the main discriminators of 2013 was then-MP from Regions Party Vadym Kolesnychenko with homophobic bill “On ban of gay sexual relationship propaganda aimed at children”.
